The Senate approves the core of the constitutional bill on the premiership, Article 5, which enables the direct election of the Prime Minister. All opposition parties left the chamber and did not participate in the vote. The opposition senators displayed placards in both the chamber and the Garibaldi Hall, including "gag on democracy" and "and it's immediately Pera" (an ironic reference to the former president of the Senate). They also referenced the last parliamentary speeches of Giacomo Matteotti, a century after the fascist killing of the socialist deputy.
