There are those who are poor, lacking the means, even the most basic means to live, but are loved by God and never abandoned by Him. And there are those, on the other hand, who are rich, perhaps because they have bypassed and trampled on the rights and dignity of others in order to become someone, or are powerful, or so believe themselves by moving with arrogance and the violent means of war. Well, those are "wretched in the eyes of God". In light also of the wounds caused by today's conflicts, yesterday Pope Francis drew a stark difference between material poverty and spiritual poverty in his message for the 8th World Day of the Poor, the anniversary he established in 2016 to never let people forget those living on the margins of society. In 2024, the Day will be celebrated next November 17 and, as every year, the Pope will preside at a Mass in St. Peter's Basilica and sit alongside some of the poor in Paul VI Hall for a luncheon organized by the Dicastery for Charity, while the Dicastery for Evangelization will take care of the neediest with various charitable initiatives.
