Pope Francis (often targeted for satire) has demolished another taboo: one can laugh at God. The Argentine Pontiff wanted to gather the most famous comedians at the Vatican, praising them for the art of putting good humor in others. He himself does not lack a sense of humor; he makes abundant use of it, perhaps to lighten the heaviness and stress of certain days. Listening to him were over a hundred actors who had come from different parts of the world just not to miss this unique moment. Whoopi Goldberg, the legendary performer of “Sister act”, Enrico Brignano, Massimo Boldi, Christian De Sica, Giovanni and Giacomo, Jimmy Fallon, Chris Rock, Conan O'Brien, James Martin, Cochi and Renato, Lino Banfi, Nino Frassica, Alessandro Bergonzoni, Luca Bizzarri, and Luciana Littizzetto, to name a few, could be glimpsed in the front rows. The latter was delegated for reading the Prayer for Good Humor composed by St. Thomas More. "Give me Lord, a sense of humor, give me the grace to understand jokes, that I may have in life some joy". Then Francis went further and in his speech asked the audience a not-so-obvious question, "Can one laugh even at God?" The answer was surprising: “Of course, and it is not blasphemy, just as we play and joke with the people we love. The Jewish literary tradition is a master in this! It can be done but without offending the religious feelings of believers, especially the poor”.
