A salary of €1,250 a month? No thanks, I'd rather be abroad. This is the answer given by six out of 10 Italian university graduates, according to a survey covering about 660 thousand graduates from 78 universities. They say they are satisfied with their chosen course of study (so says 90.5%), but they appear increasingly selective on the employment search front, aiming for activities that are adequately paid and consistent with their education. And they are more than ready to go abroad where salaries are higher. This is the profile of Italian PhDs who are increasingly unwilling to accept low-paying jobs. In 2023, it is pointed out, "one year after graduation, the share among graduates of those who would accept a salary of at most €1,250 euros is 32.9%. Also one year after graduation, the net monthly salary is, on average, €1,384 for first-level graduates and €1,432 for second-level graduates. At five years, on the other hand, at €1,706 for first-level graduates and €1,768 for second-level graduates". Quite different figures compared to that collected abroad which, it is pointed out, "are significantly higher: overall, second-level graduates who moved abroad receive, one year after graduation, €2,174 per month net, a +56.1% compared to the €1,393 of those who remained in Italy”.
