The accident that occurred on June 17 in the hamlet of Borgo Santa Maria in Latina, involving a 30-year-old Indian worker who lost an arm while cutting hay on a farm, has sparked a political debate about working conditions in Italy. The man, who was also seriously injured in his legs, was left in front of his home before being rescued by compatriots and taken to the hospital, where he is currently being treated. In addition, the amputated limb was thrown into the fields in an attempt to conceal the truth. The prosecutor's office is investigating very serious injuries and failure to render aid, while investigations into the worker's contractual position continue. Following the incident, which sparked the union's concern, politicians, particularly those in opposition, made numerous comments about it, urging the government to take immediate action to protect the health and safety of agricultural workers. Furthermore, opposition parties have highlighted the links between agromafias and the lack of workplace protections in relation to illegal hiring (coporalato, in italian). The latter is an illegal form of labor recruitment and organization in dependent work, so named after the slang term for the intermediaries, known as corporals, who hire workers for a short period of time (daily or weekly) without regard for hiring rules or their rights.
