France, historically regarded as the cheese-making capital of the world, is Europe's most devoted to buffalo mozzarella. In fact, it has been consumed by as many as 7 out of 10 French individuals in the past year. They prefer it to burrata and stracciatella, which are Italian stretched curd cheeses that are chosen by one in two French individuals. Conversely, of the foreign cheeses, Italian cheeses are the preferred choice of six out of ten French individuals, with Dutch and Spanish cheeses following in order of preference. In fact, Italy is France's largest exporter of cheese and dairy products, accounting for 34% of imports (the Netherlands comes in second at 19%). And, between 2018 and 2023, the value increased by 80%, reaching nearly 1 billion euros. The queen is buffalo mozzarella from Campania, and France is the main destination country for exports, accounting for nearly 30% of the total. Mozzarella is chosen primarily because it is a fresh food, ideal for summer consumption, and because it is regarded as a symbol of Italian cuisine. One French out of two is best consumed with tomato in the famous Caprese salad.
