Criminal organizations, which have been dedicated to infiltrating the legal economy for an extended period, have "implemented relational skills by substituting the use of violence, which is becoming increasingly residual but never repudiated, with strategies of silent infiltration and corrupt actions". This is stated in the Anti-Mafia Investigative Directorate's Report to Parliament on Activities in the First Six Months of 2023. "Today", according to this report, "the mafias prefer to turn their attention to business-entrepreneurial areas, taking advantage of the huge amounts of capital accumulated through illegal activities". Nevertheless, "cases of intimidation against local administrators, both city councilors and mayors, are increasing". The director of the DIA, Michele Carbone, stated that "there have been instances of collusion in the political-administrative apparatus, as evidenced by the long list of municipal councils that have been dissolved due to mafia infiltration. Where many public administrations oppose these infiltrations, they face damage and threats". Carbone adds, "The most concerning data is the increase in the number of weapons seized. A fact that is reflected across the EU". On the law enforcement front, over 29 million assets have been seized, with nearly 130 million confiscated. In detail, more than 4 million assets were seized from Calabrian organized crime, approximately two from Sicily, and 2.6 from Campania. In terms of confiscations, the assets seized from Sicilian criminals are estimated to be worth nearly $100 million.
