A 40-year-old man from Calabria pretended to be someone who had only worked nine days in three years. Responding to school staffing requests for annual assignments, the man arrived on time for work and then presented a medical certificate three days later attesting to serious health problems such as kidney failure and dermatoid psoriasis. The school principals, relying on seemingly legitimate medical certificates drawn up by compliant doctors - five of whom were condemned by the Guardia di Finanza - had no choice but to accept the situation and appoint a substitute teacher. Meanwhile, the "sick" janitor returned to Calabria and worked as a long-term car rental broker without authorization, traveling frequently for work and pleasure in Italy and abroad. The scam lasted three school years, during which the man frequently changed schools while remaining in the same region, Western Friuli. In total, he stole over 40,000 euros from the Ministry of Education.
