In 2022, the average number of children per woman is 1.24 (1.25 in 2021), which is far below the minimum threshold to ensure generational turnover (about 2.1 children). According to Istat, the average age of the mother at childbirth is 32.4 years. At the regional level, the highest levels of fertility are in the Autonomous Provinces of Bolzano/ Bozen (1.64) and Trento (1.36), while Sardinia has the lowest value (0.95), down from 0.99 in 2021. In the European ranking, Italy is among the EU countries with the lowest fertility and among those with the most delayed reproductive calendar.
