Payments in Italy are increasingly digital with a growth rate of 22% in 2023, compared to a European average of between 11 and 12%. This is according to a report by Qonto, which specializes in financial management solutions for businesses, on the habits of more than 500 thousand small and medium-sized businesses and professionals in Europe. The report shows that a "clear shift toward virtual cards and online transactions, processed through a merchant's website" is underway at the European level. The figure "confirms the broad digital transformation of SMEs' financial practices", although offline payments, processed directly in-store via a terminal, continue to carve out the largest share of the market. Meanwhile, according to SumUp's analysis based on credit and debit card transactions, European soccer is driving consumption in bars on the eve of the matches: spending is up 7.1% on a weekly basis on the eve of the national team's opener.
