In Italy, the total surface of the beaches measures less than the territory of the municipality of Ostia in Rome: 120 square kilometers, which includes the large beaches of Rimini or Locride, up to the small and suggestive "pocket beaches" between the cliffs of Asinara, or the small beaches that survive between the ports, promenades, or artificial cliffs in front of our seaside cities. The size appears small; on average, Italian beaches are 35 meters deep and cover 41% of the coast, or approximately 3,400 kilometers, out of a total of over 8,300 kilometers. This is one of the first results of the renewed ISPRA census on beaches, which this year updates and integrates coastal data from 2020, completing the information previously processed for the Coastline and Back-beach Line.
