The Macerata Honey Route is the inaugural itinerary designed to promote sustainable tourism in the context of beekeeping. It encompasses the five municipalities of the Marche region that are members of the Le Città del Miele association. The project was initiated by the Macerata Beekeepers Consortium, a provincial territory that includes five "Cities of Honey" encompassing a variety of destinations from the mountain to the hilly area, from vineyards to art cities, such as Matelica, Monte Cavallo, Montelupone, Urbisaglia, and Valfornace. All in line with the Marche Region's programs to promote local beekeeping. The beekeeping proposal incorporates the various itinerary solutions with reception services, accommodation, and experiences to be lived in the various stages, all of which are clearly indicated and described on the Strada del Miele di Macerata website, a user-friendly "digital platform" augmented by an interactive map. The itinerary, which can be completed in its entirety or in part, encompasses a wide range of landscapes, such as hills, mountains, natural parks, and medieval villages that are encircled by vineyards, woods, and meadows that extend beyond the horizon. This region is renowned for its exceptional bee breeding, as it boasts a particularly robust biodiversity that is ideal for the production of exceptional honey. There are numerous options for different goals and interests: there are themed itineraries with suggestions on art and culture, history, religion, nature, and trekking, as well as routes by car, camper, motorcycle, and cycle tourism of varying lengths and levels of difficulty. A unique opportunity to discover the area's diverse honeys, which range from wildflower to acacia, sunflower to chestnut, passing through plants known since ancient times for their beneficial, anti-inflammatory, and digestive properties, such as witch grass and alfalfa. There is an abundance of opportunities to engage with the work of beekeepers, including visits to the apiaries to learn about the diverse blooms that surround them, observing the honey extraction process, being guided in the identification of the flavors and aromas of various types of honey, tasting them in combination with local products, exploring honey cuisine, learning about the advantages of apitherapy and natural cosmetics derived from beehive products, and, of course, purchasing honey directly from the producers.
