The wholesale price index of agri-food products, compiled by Unioncamere and BMTI, shows increases in May compared to the previous month for wholesale prices of fresh produce, especially fruit and vegetables, milk and poultry meat (chicken, turkey). By contrast, wholesale prices for beef fell, while among processed products, those for olive oil, rice and flour remained stable. Specifically, in the fruit and vegetable sector, the rains in May did not favor the consumption of typically summer fruits and vegetables. In addition, hailstorms that affected some production areas ruined part of the production, limiting its availability. As for fruits, prices of citrus fruits (+10% for oranges and +8.4% for lemons) and peaches (nearly 15%) increased. Melons and apples were stable and berries were down 15%. Among vegetables, prices for eggplants, peppers and zucchini are up 5.5% from the previous month. In contrast, salad tomatoes fell 14% (down 28.5% from 2023). Finally, wholesale prices for artichokes and green beans rose nearly 20%.
