There are 12 EU infringement procedures against Italy opened since the beginning of the year. This is what OpenPolis reports in its in-depth study “Numeri alla mano” ("Numbers in hand"). In recent days, the European Commission recommended the opening of an infringement procedure against 7 countries, including Italy, for excessive deficit. In fact, in 2023, our country's deficit was 7.4% of GDP, when EU regulations stipulate a maximum limit of 3%. The Commission's proposal will now have to go before the EU Council, which is responsible for deciding on the formal opening of the procedure. This new proposal is in addition to the 11 other procedures already opened for Italy's failure to comply or incorrectly complying with EU regulations.
