"On the night of June 29, 2009, Viareggio was wounded as a result of a train disaster that, today as then, appears unacceptable to us. The images and memories of that tragedy are indelible". The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, reflected on the tragedy of Viareggio, the train accident that occurred on June 29, 2009, at the station of the city of Viareggio in the province of Lucca. The accident resulted in the deaths of 32 individuals and the injury of 100 others. "On the fifteenth anniversary, the Republic is close to the relatives who witnessed their loved ones being unexpectedly taken from life and who, in their pain, were able to initiate a civil process to ascertain the responsibilities of the incident and to promote greater safety in transportation worldwide", said the Head of State. "Infrastructure networks, particularly railways, are critical to the country's survival and economic development. Security is a fundamental right of citizens and users, as well as an essential prerequisite. We cannot derogate from the established standards; on the contrary, the level of safety must be raised through more effective controls and technologies and through a general increase in awareness. Transportation safety, like workplace safety, is an indicator of civilization that must take precedence over any profit logic, because it affects people's lives. This is a lesson we must never forget".
