Antonello Lovato, Satnam Singh's employer, was arrested by the carabinieri of Latina on charges of "intentional homicide". Satnam Singh was a labourer who died after being abandoned seriously injured in front of the house where he lived, following an accident at work in which a machine had severed his arm and broken his legs. In front of the house, the severed arm was also left in a fruit box. The incident took place on a farm in Borgo Santa Maria, in the province of Latina. As the Latina Public Prosecutor's Office makes known: "On the basis of the results of the forensic medical advice, the Prosecutor's Office has varied the hypothesis of crime initially configured (manslaughter) and has contested the crime of intentional homicide with possible malice - reads the note - The forensic medical advice has ascertained that where the Indian, who died from copious blood loss, Had he been promptly rescued, he would in all probability have been saved." The Latina Public Prosecutor's Office goes on to point out that "the worker's condition after the accident was so serious as to make clear the need for timely assistance", and again that for the investigators "the decision to omit the necessary assistance constituted acceptance of the risk of the lethal event and integrated the cause that directly determined the death". The investigation, the Prosecutor's Office clarifies, continues "with reference to the crime being charged and other related crimes, with specific regard to the ascertainment of working conditions." The incident has once again turned the spotlight in Italy on the phenomenon of caporalato, an illegal form of recruitment and organization of labor in salaried labor. The phenomenon is thus defined by the slang name of the intermediaries - called corporals - who hire workers for a short period (daily or at most weekly) without respecting the rules of recruitment and workers' rights.
