Yesterday afternoon, Pope Francis received at Casa Santa Marta a Senegalese and a Gambian who are authors of books in which they recount the odyssey they suffered in the search for a new land. Accompanying them among others were Fr. Mattia Ferrari, chaplain of Mediterranea Saving Humans, and NGO founder Luca Casarini. Francis wanted to listen to their stories and thanked everyone for what they do and what they experience and encouraged them to keep going. Also alongside the young man from Senegal and Gambia was Pato, who had met the Pope back in November 2023 - he, Fati's husband, and the father of Marie, the mother and little girl who died of thirst in the desert last year, immortalized as a reminder to consciences in their final, heartbreaking embrace that went around the world.
