According to data released today by the Ministry of Culture, nearly 58 million people visited Italian museums in 2023, a record number that falls just short of the Italian population. This is a 23% increase over 2022, with 10.7 million more visitors. Admissions increased by 2.4 million compared to the pre-pandemic period in 2018. The Colosseum leads the list of the most visited museums, with over 12 million visitors, followed by the Pantheon, which has more than 5 million admissions, including both free and paid admission periods. The Uffizi Galleries are located on the third step of the podium. This is followed by the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, the Accademia Gallery in Florence, Castel Sant'Angelo, the Egyptian Museum in Turin, the Royal Palace of Caserta, Hadrian's Villa and Villa d'Este, and the Vittoriano and Palazzo Venezia. The Accademia Gallery and the Bargello Museums in Florence, which are preparing to merge into a single autonomous institute, have seen an increase in visitors by more than 40% each. Total takings were €313.9 million, up 34% from the previous year and 30% from 2019, the peak year prior to the pandemic.
