The U.S. player was forced to retire due to injury at 5-5 in the third set, after having steered the match in her favor. The Italian started well in the first set (6-3), but lost the second at the tie-break (7-6). The American flew to 5-2 in the last game, when she felt a muscle problem that compromised her match. In the quarterfinals, the Italian will face Navarro, who beat Gauff.
