"It is clear that democracy is in poor health in today's world. This interests and concerns us because the welfare of mankind is at stake, and we cannot turn a blind eye to anything having to do with humans". This is what Pope Francis said during his speech in Trieste at the end of Italy's 50th Catholic Social Week. He also stated that "fraternity fosters the growth of social relationships; conversely, it necessitates the courage to consider ourselves as people. It takes courage to think of yourself as a community rather than just me, my clan, my family, or my friends. Unfortunately, this category - 'people' - is frequently misinterpreted, which could lead to the abolition of the very term 'democracy' ('government of the people'). Nonetheless, in order to assert that society is more than the sum of its parts, the term 'people' is required, which is not populism. No, it's something else: people. In reality, it is exceedingly challenging to develop an exceptional product that endures over an extended period of time without it becoming a shared vision. A democracy with a healed heart continues to cultivate dreams for the future, putting them into action, and encouraging personal and community involvement. Dreaming about the future. Don't be scared". "Don't be fooled by simple solutions. Instead, let us be passionate about the common good", warns the pontiff. "It is our responsibility not to manipulate or distort the term democracy with meaningless titles capable of justifying any action. Democracy is not an empty box; it is linked to personal values, fraternity, and integral ecology", concluded Pope Francis.
