Compared to France, Spain, Germany, and the United Kingdom, Italy had a higher average premium of €60 and a lower, negative margin per policy of about -€23 in 2022. Following losses in 2022, mainly related to inflation that raised claims costs, average premiums soared in 2023. According to data from Segugio.it, however, the situation stabilized in 2024, leading to a decline in premiums of -3.6% in the first six months of the year. Italy has historically been the country with the most expensive third-party motor liability in comparison with major European countries. This price difference is mainly explained by the higher cost of repairs following claims. However, the price differential compared to other countries has been steadily decreasing and has fallen to €60 in 2022, less than a third of the €195 about 10 years earlier. Specifically, Italy recorded an average premium net of tax and parafiscal charges of €286, compared with €226 for the average in other countries. Only the United Kingdom recorded a higher premium, while prices in Spain and France were significantly lower, at around €176 and €186, respectively.
