The last person to commit suicide was an 81-year-old man. Suicides in Italian prisons have become a crisis. According to the most recent data updated on July 5 and released by the National Guarantor of Persons Deprived of Personal Liberty, 50 detainees have committed suicide since the start of the year. "48 men and 2 women, 27 Italians and 23 foreigners representing 14 different countries. Nineteen people (38%) committed suicide while awaiting trial. The average age is approximately 39 years". "According to our calculations," explains the Guarantor, "the record number of suicides in the last two decades was in 2022, with 83 people taking their own lives. In 2023, there were 70 suicides in prison". In addition to the dramatic numerical aspect, the timing of these events is also significant. "Almost half of the people who have taken their own lives in prison in these six months were awaiting trial or in conditions of temporary internment".
