Italy along with the US, Germany, Romania and the Netherlands is ready to strengthen Kiev's air defense system by providing Volodymyr Zelensky with an additional Samp-T system. A decision that confirms Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's full support for the Ukrainian cause despite the reservations that have also emerged in recent days from her government ally Matteo Salvini. "Helping Kiev defend itself means defending the civilians and critical infrastructure that Russia continues to attack," said Meloni, who also returned to the thorny issue of spending dedicated to defense and thus meeting the commitment to reach at least 2% of GDP signed with NATO. Italy will "meet its commitments depending on the situation" and "with the timeframe and possibilities we have". A response infused with diplomacy that in fact confirms the readiness but also the impossibility of quickly reaching the 2% target that costs about 10 billion euros. Meloni once again repeated, however, that the entire Italian commitment to the alliance must be taken into account in the count. “We are among the largest contributors of personnel in peacekeeping missions because we are good and available and this should also be considered”.
