In 2023, the separate collection of paper and cardboard in Italy grew by almost 3% compared to 2022 and reached a record share of more than 3.7 million tons. The trend is also positively reflected in the cellulosic packaging recycling rate, which reaches 92.3%, well ahead of the EU 2030 targets (85%). The data highlight the solidity of the collection and recycling system: a "beehive" of which municipalities, environmental service managers, the paper and cardboard recycling chain and citizens are part, whose efforts have conferred an average of about 64 kg each, a result never achieved before. Record result also for the South, which reaches an average of 50 kg per inhabitant. In this kind of "Tour of Italy" of separate waste collection, the pink jersey for the North goes to Emilia Romagna with more than 93 kg per inhabitant, for the Center it is assigned to Tuscany with almost 90 kg per inhabitant and for the South to Sardinia with more than 61 kg per inhabitant. Among large cities, a special mention goes to Rome, which grows by 3,600 tons (+1.5%).
