Approximately 350,000 Italian pensioners reside abroad. 2.6% of the over 17 million individuals who are stable outside of their national borders. They are divided into 165 countries and receive an estimated 1.5 billion euros. Pension tourism appears to have exploded in recent years, with the number of retirees moving elsewhere increasing by nearly 11%, according to the most recent INPS data (2022). The newspapers La Stampa and Italia Oggi have photographed the phenomenon. More specifically, Spain (primarily the Canary Islands) ranks first among the privileged and most representative countries of this phenomenon, followed by Tunisia, Portugal (which is no longer active under the facilitated regime), and Bulgaria. The reasons are (almost) always the same: attractive tax breaks, lower living costs, and increased purchasing power.
