The bodies of two young men who disappeared in the waters of the Brenta River in San Martino di Lupari, Padua, have both been recovered by firefighters. The first body, that of a 30-year-old Romanian man, was found Sunday evening. A few hours later, the body of the 23-year-old Sri Lankan man was also found. It was the latter who had been in trouble in the river waters, and the 30-year-old had jumped in an attempt to help him. But then both were sucked into the current. Several witnesses had witnessed the dramatic scene, some of whom had reportedly tried to help the two very young men, but they disappeared almost immediately from sight. According to an initial dynamic, the young Sinhalese man dived first, possibly in an attempt to retrieve a ball. A young man from another group saw him in difficulty and dived in to try to help him, but was carried away in turn by the current. There are no-swimming beaches in that stretch; despite this, the beaches are frequented mostly by foreigners in summer on hot days. Locals know the danger of the Brenta River, which is particularly treacherous in that stretch because of eddies and depressions in the seabed.
