Italian citizens abroad are on the rise. This is certified by Istat, according to which, as of December 31, 2022, there are 5.9 million Italian citizens habitually living abroad, 97,000 more than at the beginning of the year. However, in relative terms, the increase is slight (+1.7%). The number of Italian citizens residing abroad grows in 2022 due to various causes: in migration flows with Italy, expatriates exceed repatriations by more than 25 thousand (slightly more women than men), the natural dynamic is positive (25 thousand births versus 8 thousand deaths), and 85 thousand acquisitions of Italian citizenship are recorded. Among compatriots abroad, more than half (3 million 246 thousand) reside in Europe and more than 2 million 384 thousand in America (about 95% of residents abroad reside on the two continents). The consulate with the highest presence of Italians is London (they are mostly men and among the youngest of the entire contingent residing abroad), followed by Buenos Aires, with just over 322 thousand Italians, here more are women and the median age is 49.
