In 2022, the conflict in Ukraine and the energy crisis had a negative impact on the Italian economy, resulting in a decrease in special waste production compared to 2021. Industrial, commercial, artisanal, service, waste treatment, and environmental remediation activities generated 161.4 million tonnes of special waste, a 2.1% decrease from the previous year, or more than 3.4 million tonnes less. Once again, the construction and demolition sector has the highest total production of special waste, accounting for nearly 80.8 million tons, or 50% of total production. Non-hazardous waste, which accounts for 93.8% of total waste production, fell by 2.7 million tonnes (-1.8%), while hazardous waste fell by nearly 680,000 tonnes (-6.4%). The amount of asbestos-containing waste produced (243 thousand tonnes) is down sharply from 2021 (-28.3%).
