Almost one-third (32%) of Italians who go on vacation choose to spend their vacation or at least part of it in their region, the highest percentage in ten years with the exception of 2020, when Covid restrictions limited destinations, particularly long-distance destinations. According to a Coldiretti/Ixe' survey, the number of zero-kilometer vacationers will increase by 28% in 2024 compared to the previous year. The increasing success of the towns and villages, a heritage of taste and biodiversity that also drive tourism, is also promoting zero-km holidays. According to Ixe', two out of every three Italians (65%) who will go on vacation will visit a small town with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants in the summer of 2024.
