Moments of terror occurred late Monday evening in the Scampia neighborhood of Naples. The collapse of a connecting balcony in the Vela Celeste, a public housing settlement in the area, caused two deaths and 13 injuries, including seven children. Two people are reported to be in serious condition. The collapse, which occurred on the third floor, also caused the balconies on the second and first floors to fall. After digging through the rubble, firefighters completed the evacuation of the upper floors. About 800 people were evacuated. The evacuation was ordered to allow for technical inspections of the building. The deceased are Roberto Abbruzzo, 29, who died instantly, and Margherita Della Ragione, 35, who died during the night due to cardiac arrest caused by severe injuries. The seven children involved are all in critical condition at the Santobono Hospital in the city, with two in intensive care.
