In the first six months of the year, production from renewable sources (+27.3% compared to the first half of 2023) surpassed production from fossil fuels for the first time, which decreased by 19% compared to the same period in 2023, with an even greater reduction in the share of coal-fired production. This is the conclusion drawn from data from Terna, the Italian company in charge of the electricity grid. Furthermore, from January to June 2024, renewable hydropower production set a record due to abundant water in the North. In June, domestic production met 88.5% of Italian electricity demand, with the remaining 11.5% coming from the balance of energy exchanged with foreign countries. Between June 2023 and June 2024, the installed capacity of photovoltaic and wind power increased by 6,831 MW (+17.3%), to 46,321 MW.
