All 20 standing committees and four subcommittees of the European Parliament held their constituent meetings to elect their chair and vice-chairs. Not all vice-chairs were appointed Tuesday, with some committees completing the election of their bureau soon. The bureau of a committee (the chair and up to four vice-chairs) is elected for a two-and-a-half-year term. Committees deal with legislative proposals, appoint negotiating teams to conduct talks with EU ministers, adopt reports, hold hearings, and monitor other EU bodies and institutions.
