A possible squeeze for SUVs is on the way in Milan. An increase in the on-street parking fee, from two to three times the ordinary one, for cars weighing more than 1.6 tons, including electrics. This is the motion coming from mixed group city councilor Enrico Fedrighini, also signed by PD and Green councillors. In the meantime, the debate in the courtroom is awaited. City Councillor for Green and Environment Elena Grandi, a member of the Greens, said, "I believe that everything that occupies our street should be penalized in some way, I'm not saying penalized, but you have to be aware that if you occupy public land with an SUV maybe it's fair that you pay something more. Maybe you have to consider whether it's a matter of measurements and weight. I think it's a fair idea, though". Just as bars that occupy public land with tables pay a fee, so should cars. According to the alderman, "the soil belongs to everyone," and this would not be a way to “cash in”.
