The world of golf mourns Franco Chimenti, President of Federgolf (FIG), who died at 85 in Rome. A few days ago he had been re-elected to the leadership of FIG. Born in Naples on August 7, 1939, Chimenti was a longtime professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at 'La Sapienza' University in Rome, where he later served as dean; he was a member of the New York Academy of Sciences. But it is to sport that he devoted most of his working life. From 1981 to 1985 he served as Vice President of the Lazio Sports Club, of which he became President in 1986. In 2002, he was first elected President of the Italian Golf Federation and joined the CONI National Council. He would be re-elected four times to the leadership of FIG, most recently on September 16. It was he who first brought the Ryder Cup to Italy last year.
