Over a hundred works from the Louvre, Met New York, Albertina Museum, Uffizi Galleries, National Archaeological Museum of Florence, Church of Santa Maria Novella, Vatican Library, Sforza Castle, and private collections have arrived in Arezzo for a major Vasari exhibition. The thickness is to honor an intellectual who coined a neologism that is still popular today: Renaissance. "With Vasari, Arezzo speaks to the world through art", says Mayor Alessandro Ghinelli. "The exhibition is a special opportunity to appreciate the city with its beauty and the genius of Vasari, a multifaceted artist and interpreter of his time". Architect, painter, politician, and communicator. In 1553, Vasari capitalized on the chance discovery of the Etruscan chimera during excavations around the bastion of San Lorentino in the current Porta del Foro district. He incorporated the chimera into the political propaganda of Cosimo de' Medici, his protector for twenty years, as a symbol of a civilization that existed prior to the authority of imperial Rome, the ancestor of modern Tuscany. That bronze is back where it belongs: in the heart of a dedicated chamber. Ghinelli: "I am proud to have returned to Arezzo a bronze of elegance and refinement that is a part of the tradition of our land, as it represents our identity for the people of Arezzo. It's amazing to be able to showcase it for a few months". The exhibition runs until February 2, 2025, and it is divided into eight sections, showcasing the extensive network of relationships and innovations that Vasari interpreted—elements that would forever change the course of art history. Among the masterpieces on display in Arezzo are The Temptations of St. Jerome, The Apotheosis of Virtues, Allegory of Sleep, and Allegory of Oblivion.
