According to the 2024 Waste Watcher International Report "Food waste in G7 countries: from analysis to action," edited by the Waste Watcher International Observatory and the University of Bologna in collaboration with Ipsos, food waste in Italy is increasing by 45.6% in 2024. This translates to 683.3 grams of food per capita being disposed of in the garbage can each week, a significant increase from the 469.4 grams detected in August 2023. Fresh fruit (27.1 grams), vegetables (24.6 grams), fresh bread (24.1 grams), salads (22.3 grams), onions, garlic, and tubers (20 grams) are among the foods most commonly discarded. Among the factors that have contributed to an increase in food waste in Italy, some significant variables may be identified that are independent of individual behavior but identifiable in the poor quality of the products purchased. The cause of family waste is identified by 42% of the responses as the necessity of discarding fruit and vegetables preserved in cold rooms due to their immediate spoilage upon arrival at home. Additionally, 37% of the respondents report that they discard food due to the food being sold being too old.
