"I hope that the Cop29 climate change conference, which will begin tomorrow in Baku, will make an effective contribution to the protection of our common home". At the end of the Angelus, Pope Francis mentions the upcoming United Nations summit. He does so by linking it to the three years since the launch of the Laudato si' platform of initiatives, the shared space in which the Church develops responses to the ecological crisis in the wake of Francis' encyclical of the same name, thanking "those who work in favor of this initiative". The Pontiff then expresses his closeness to the people "of Flores Island, Indonesia," where, since last week, eruptions of the Lewotobi Laki Laki volcano have been occurring. Francis prays "for the victims, their families and the displaced". Among the dead, at least 10, was also a nun: Sister Nikolin Padjo, a missionary servant of the Holy Spirit who resided in the St. Gabriel Monastery. Francis then addressed the faithful in St. Peter's Square, referring to his appeal for the flood-affected people of Spain in the post-Angelus Sunday, November 3. "What do I do for the people of Valencia? Do I pray? Do I offer anything? Think about this question," the Pope had said, renewing remembrance for all those "who are facing the consequences" of the heavy rains of recent weeks.
