"Seventy-five years ago the Treaty of London that established the Council of Europe and the Treaty of Washington saw the light. From there, NATO, a defensive organization of free countries, took its start. The Italian Republic is proud to have participated since its foundation in these Pacts between free and sovereign nations, according to a choice that allowed it to overcome the tragedy of the Second World Conflict in a context of international cooperation corresponding to the dictate of its Constitution and with the affirmation of principles of independence, freedom, security, economic and social growth". These are the words of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, entrusted in a message on the occasion of the conference "The 75th Anniversary of the Council of Europe and NATO, the pillars of democratic security", which took place yesterday at the Chamber of Deputies. "In particular," the Head of State added, "it stands out today how the Atlantic Alliance has contributed, in a decisive way, to international stability and the longest period of peace experienced by the European Continent, a firm anchor for our country's security. The current phase of instability confirms the validity of those choices. The Russian Federation's unacceptable aggression against Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East are obvious reasons for this. In both cases, the consequences for civilians and the territories involved are very serious, devastating. The work of international delegations to their respective parliamentary assemblies is invaluable in growing cohesion among European institutions and peoples and the spirit of common responsibility. To all participants in the meeting I am grateful to extend best wishes for good work".
