The EU has decided to invest in the Iris 2 (Infrastructure for resilience and security by satellite) project to equip itself with its own constellation of telecommunications satellites and to make itself independent of networks such as Elon Musk's Starlink. The deal involves a public-private partnership with an investment of 10 billion euros. Of this, 6 billion euros are coming from the common budget and 4 from the private sector. Pending the final green light from Parliament to the European Commission, the EU would seem to have fully learned the philosophy behind Mario Draghi and Enrico Letta's reports, that is to proceed through concrete acts to build greater and more effective integration. To start the project, the Commission accepted the bid of the SpaceRise consortium formed by French Eutelsat, Spanish Hispasat and Luxembourg SES. One of the 3 control centers will be in Italy, but what really matters is the hardware, and Italian industries are ready to collaborate on this front.
