Located in deep Gallura, in the province of Sassari, Berchidda is known for its food and wine traditions, a medieval castle and an internationally renowned jazz event. Rising on the southern slopes of Limbara and a stone's throw from Lake Coghinas, it is a town whose charm is first and foremost due to neoclassical and Art Nouveau houses and buildings that climb steep streets. Important places in the village are the Parish Church of San Sebastiano, which preserves a Baroque wooden altar, the 17th-century Church of the Rosary, and the main square, from which there is a splendid view of the valley and Mount Acuto. Also worth seeing are the country churches of Santa Caterina and Sant'Andrea (17th century) and the Butterfly Garden on Limbara. Another jewel then is the castle of Montacuto, built in the 11th century, a witness to local medieval events. Today its ruins of walls, a tower and a cistern remain, but they still tell of its majesty. Also present in the area are various prehistoric testimonies, such as tafoni and inhabited caves, domus de Janas necropolis, dolmens, megalithic structures (Pedriscalas and s'Iscala Serrada), Giants' tombs and nuraghi. Moreover, together with Roman there are Republican coins, remains of the Olbia-Turris Libisonis, and a bridge along the Silvani River. All surrounded by unspoiled and lush nature, where centuries-old oaks, streams and small waterfalls dominate. In this area, vineyards are plentiful, as this is where Vermentino di Gallura, a Sardinian wine of controlled and guaranteed origin, is produced. It is no coincidence that at the foot of the hill of Sant'Alvara is the Wine Museum, which traces the history of viticulture in Sardinia. For a unique gastronomic experience, in fact, local wineries are worth visiting. Other unforgettable flavors include the sweet "sospiri" and "suppa cuatta", "spianate" dipped in sheep's broth, fresh and aged pecorino cheese. Also worth trying are "maccarones furriados" and "sas laldadinas," stuffed dough dumplings. There are also many events worth attending that attract curious people and emigrants returning to their homeland every year. From the sheep fair in May to the country festivals of St. Mark (April 25), St. Michael (mid-May) and St. Catherine (early June), passing through Time in Jazz for a week straddling Ferragosto. The latter is the pride of the village, which comes alive with sounds and colors to welcome musicians from around the world. Berchidda is ready to offer the best of Sardinia, including nature, history and traditions.
