Steve Bannon is like a river in flood. The former strategist of Trump's 2016 victory and leader of the media arm of the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, in his interview with Corriere della Sera paper, tackles foreign policy issues and leaves no doubt as to what he believes will be the next moves of the United States. On the Ukrainian issue, Bannon argues that NATO countries, including Italy, should change their strategy: "We in the MAGA movement are firm on our position, we want to cut 100% of the funds allocated to Ukraine in the House. If Europe wants to support Kiev, then let it put up the money". Referring to the Italian Prime Minister's policy, he adds, "Many within the movement think that Meloni has turned almost into a Nikki Haley, having been among the main supporters of the continuation of the conflict in Ukraine". According to Bannon, Italy should do more to secure the Suez Canal in international trade: "Among the military units operating in the area, it seems to me there is only one Italian corvette. However, I think its position will change with Trump's return to the White House, which will bring it to our side". For Bannon, NATO will adhere to this line fairly quickly; otherwise, if Europe really believes what it has been saying in recent years, it will have to be ready to commit itself financially. He concludes with a piece of advice to the Italian PM: "I recommend that Meloni go back to being what she was when Fratelli d'Italia was at 3% approval”.
