One out of every four school canteens has irregularities, ranging from hygienic-structural deficiencies, such as the presence of insects and rodent traces, to the lack of necessary authorizations, to insufficient meals in quantity and quality, a lack of food traceability, and a lack of allergen identification. These are the initial results of the national control campaign undertaken by the Carabinieri of the NAS, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, at the start of the school year. Over 700 school canteens were inspected, including those at all levels, both public and private, from kindergarten to high school and university. A total of 225 administrative or criminal infractions were found, and penalties of 130 thousand euros were levied. In the most serious incidents, five managers were reported to judicial authorities, and cooking sites, pantries, and around 350 kg of food in poor preservation, without traceability, expired, or labeled incorrectly were seized for a total of 5 million euros. In Treviso, an educational center for children aged 2 to 6 was seized due to its failure to obtain authorization for school meals and health registration. In Pescara, a nursery school was forced to suspend all food handling and administration activities immediately due to severe hygienic-sanitary and structural deficiencies, as well as the absence of authorization for the canteen. Finally, in Caserta, the owner of a company in charge of supplying school meals was reported for public-supply fraud after falsely affixing his company's label on meals produced by others.
