"When talking about climate finance, it is important to remember that ecological debt and foreign debt are two sides of the same coin, which mortgages the future". With these words, Pope Francis issued a strong warning to Cop29 in a message read by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State, who was present in Baku. Parolin reiterated the Pope's call ahead of Jubilee 2025 for wealthier nations to recognize "the gravity of so many of their past decisions" and to choose to cancel the debts of countries in need. For Pope Francis, "more than a question of generosity, this is a question of justice". The Pontiff emphasizes how this injustice is compounded by the "ecological debt" between the global North and South, linked to trade imbalances and the disproportionate exploitation of natural resources by some countries, which has left deep marks on the environment and the most vulnerable communities.
