Located in the northern part of the Salento peninsula, south of the eastern Taranto Murge, Carosino is a town in the province of Taranto nestled between valleys and white country farms. Its name originates from "Caro seno", or town dear to the Madonna, and today it boasts a significant artistic heritage, starting with the Ducal Palace built in the 1400s by the Simonetta family. Today the building is at the disposal of the community, which organizes all kinds of cultural events inside it. Then there is the Chiesa Matrice di Santa Maria delle Grazie, built between 1546 and 1577 on the site of the "old chapel", whose origins date back to the period between the second half of the 900s and the beginning of the year 1000. The church still has interesting frescoes and high-reliefs. The visit continues with the Church of St. Francis of Assisi and the Municipal Theater, which was born out of the need to have a space to foster local theatrical development. But Carosino is also able to fascinate thanks to its traditions, perfect for those who, like emigrants returning to Apulia, would like to delve into the cultural roots of a fascinating land. Specifically, the local agricultural vocation stands out, still enhanced by the many farms that make up the town's characteristic setting. Carosino also hosts the renowned Wine Festival in August, in front of the Ducal Palace, whose protagonists are the wines of Apulian tradition, such as Primitivo di Manduria and DOC wine from the province of Taranto. Since the 1960s, the people of Carosino have been waiting for the festival, one of the most heartfelt and anticipated events of the year, during which wine is made to flow from the monumental fountain in the center of the square. Other events worth discovering are: the patronal feast of St. Blaise on February 3 with related blessing of the throat (although the real feast is the second weekend in October); the Madonna of Carosino on February 17; and the Procession of the Sacred Mysteries that takes place from the afternoon to Midnight on Good Friday. Between religious events and places of historical and artistic interest, Carosino is ready to showcase the best of Puglia.
