Out of almost 60,000 convicts in Italian jails, one-third work, yet just 1% are employed by private firms and 4% by social cooperatives. The great majority, 85%, work for the Penitentiary Administration, albeit for brief periods. Six in ten convicted inmates have been incarcerated at least once before, with recidivism rates estimated to drop below 3% for those provided with professional training. Approximately 34% of convicts participate in educational programs, with 6% pursuing vocational training. While 32% of prisons have classrooms for primary, secondary, and tertiary education (more than half of these are wired for technology), 65% offer only primary and secondary education spaces, and 3.5% lack classrooms entirely.
