On Saturday and Sunday mornings in Bari, there was a strike by pasta makers who traditionally sell handmade orecchiette on Arco Basso Street in the historic center, in the neighborhood known as Bari Vecchia. Some did not display products on looms placed directly in the street, one of the city's main tourist attractions, while others continued to sell but without producing the orecchiette by hand in front of visitors, as they usually do. The reason for the protest seems to be internet-related: it all stemmed from a video circulated by a tourist, who says he had been sold industrial orecchiette, but presented as handmade. From there, further interest arose that also involved the Municipality of Bari and the Police, there were police checks, and from there the protests. According to the pasta makers, the orecchiette reported as industrial were in fact still artisanal but dried to be taken home by tourists.
