Twenty-four prison Police officers, charged with torture, abuse of authority and ideological forgery in conspiracy, were subjected to precautionary and interdiction measures. The measures included 11 house arrests and 14 suspensions from public service. In addition, search warrants were issued for a total of 46 suspects. The investigation began in 2021. The order of Trapani’s Preliminary Investigation Judge, at the request of the Prosecutor's Office, was executed by the Regional Investigative Unit of the Palermo Penitentiary Police, with the support of territorial departments coordinated by the Central Investigative Unit. According to a press note picked up by local media, the investigation revealed a widespread modus operandi characterized by physical violence and acts of harassment. The investigations, conducted and coordinated by the Palermo Regional Investigative Unit, started from complaints filed by inmates of the Trapani prison, who had reported mistreatment in places not covered by surveillance cameras. The investigations, through the installation of video surveillance devices, produced decisive evidence against the prison officers, who were later identified in part through photographic identifications made by the complaining inmates.
