Edged weapons were the most commonly used means of homicide in 2023, employed in 37.4% of cases, followed by 30.2% of firearms. On the other hand, 9.5% of homicides were carried out with the use of improper weapons, while in the remaining 22.7% of cases homicide was carried out by other means. This is announced by ISTAT in its Report on homicide victims in the year 2023. Organized crime homicides (18) were all committed with firearms. In cases where the motive for murder involves criminal feuds or vendettas, contexts involving premeditation and professionalism, the instrument used is the firearm in 90% of cases. Also in the choice of medium, as in so many other characteristics of homicides, there are distinctions when considering the sex of the victim. Firearms, the Report continues, are predominantly used against men (33.2% of male homicide cases and 24.8% of female homicide cases). Gender differences in remaining a victim of a homicide operated with edged weapons are not significant, while there is a big difference when the homicide occurs with bare hands, a case counted in the "other" category (30.8% of women and 18.4% of men). The figure is indicative, because in addition to deaths as a result of beating, suffocation and other, the category may include some deaths caused by other means (poisoning for example), which, however, are much rarer. Differences by nationality are also significant. Foreigners are more frequently the victim of a sharp weapon, used in 52% of cases where the victim is a foreigner, compared to 32% of cases where the victim is Italian. This correspondence also occurs among non-Italian nationals if the motive for the fight is for futile reasons, which sees the use of cutting weapons in 40% of cases.
