58% of Italians under 18 say adults understand teens less and less - a figure that has been growing over the past two years. And this is not surprising. Intergenerational comparison has always been complicated: but in listening to today's parents and teens, something different is discovered than the gaps that characterized past generations. 3 out of 10 teens spend more than 10 hours a day online; almost 40% between 5 and 10 hours. And it is precisely the "Internet and Social" variable, which is mysterious to non-"digital natives", that dilutes the gaps in thinking between generations: for 84% of parents, that from "web and smartphones" is a dangerous addiction and for them it is the first concern; but only 22% of teens see it as a risk. These are some of the data from research conducted by the Demopolis Institute for the social enterprise Con i Bambini, chaired by Marco Rossi-Doria, whose results were presented yesterday in Rome at the National Library. The survey focused on the different perspectives on everyday life and the future of teenagers and parents: starting with the overwhelming pessimism of 73% of parents about the future of teenagers, which is counterbalanced by the optimism of young people, prevalent but not plebiscite: today, 45% declare themselves optimistic, a figure that is not reassuring, not least because it is down 8 points from 2023.
