Maurizio Cattelan's famous “banana” was bought for $6.2 million during an auction organized by Sotheby's in New York by Chinese entrepreneur Justin Sun, founder of the cryptocurrency platform "Tron". The work, titled "Comedian", caused a sensation when it debuted in 2019 during Art Basel in Miami Beach, surprising attendees. In fact, Sun acquired a certificate of authenticity allowing him to tape a banana to the wall and give it the name "Comedian". The auction was attended by seven potential buyers and exceeded initial estimates: in fact, Sotheby's had valued the work at about $1.5 million. Bidding started at $800,000 and within minutes rose to $2 million, then to $3 million, to $4 million and beyond. The final adjudication price, announced in the room, was $5.2 million, to which was added about $1 million in fees for the auction house, to be paid by the buyer.
